Who are you?

Hi, I am Elise Russell...

Please tell us a little bit about you...

I am a podiatrist by profession and a crystal Macrame jewellery maker on the side.

I have a a deep and unconditional love for our beautiful earth, with a calling which always lures me to the sea. I find being in the ocean helps not only brings me joy and exercise but also clarity, mindfulness and an ever growing connection to our beautiful Mother Earth.

Where are you based?

I currently reside in Thirroul NSW Australia.

Where do you call home?

Cliché as it is, where my other half and loving boyfriend is is home to me. But we both can agree that anywhere on the south coast of NSW is as good as it gets!

I grew up at a sweet little town called Shoalhaven Heads which is always in my heart.  Aren’t our roots always?!  But I find being a cancerian as long as I have my man our pup and the treasures of nearest and dearest, home can also be on the coastline in our van.

What led you to surfing?

Growing up on the coast at “the Heads” definitely lead me to surfing. I believe having been a kid growing up close to the water, it’s important to interact with the ocean and have an understanding on how to deal with its powerful ways.

I mainly longboard. I venture around the Coal Coast mostly and when time and adventures permit, I like to head south.

How does surfing enrich your life?

Surfing enriches my life by bringing me into a deeper connection with our earth. It brings the upmost stoke and mindfulness, and the ability to just be present. I think it is too easy to quickly get lost in the fast paced life we tend to lead.

Have you got other hobbies?

I’ve always been a runner.  Running was always my number one before I started surfing.  I tore the meniscus from my knee three years ago which put my regular longer distance running on the back burner, but I believe life always gives us other opportunities. I love being active and indulging in nature. I love even just simple qi gong in the backyard with bare feet in the grass.

What makes your heart sing?

What makes my heart sing?… in a nutshell? Dean, our puppy Dusty, surfing, the ocean, the sand, nature and all it is. Beautiful friends and meeting new wonderful likeminded people.. Meditation, qi gong, crystals and making jewellery from them.  Red wine, dark chocolate, astrology, the moon and its phases, sunrises, sunsets travelling, smiles from strangers... Ohhh I feel I am missing so much but we can’t write a novel!

Where is your favourite place you have travelled to?

My most favourite place that I have travelled, to date, would be Sri Lanka for sure. It's super chilled (depending on the areas you’re in of course) and the people are absolutely divine.. The surf is amazing and the food is sooo delish! On a side note, childhood memories of travelling to Tassie were awesome.  I'm psyched to do a van / surf trip there as an adult.

Do you have a favourite quote?

I have two and for two vastly different reasons..

“Awake, my dear. Be kind to your sleeping heart, take it out into the vast fields of light and let it breathe” – Hafiz

”Success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success.  If you’re happy with what you are doing you will be successful” - Buddha

Where do you see women's surfing in ten years?

I see women’s surfing growing and expanding so much as it has done throughout the years. It’s so wonderful seeing so many women of all ages getting out there and having a go, and having FUN!

I think the wonderful women’s surf labels which are designed purely for women to surf are super encouraging… In still a mostly male dominated sport, it can be intimidating to get out there amongst the men (I have definitely been a candidate for this) so the more support we give each other the more influence it will have on growth.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I have rough ideas for the future, but honestly I live a lot day by day. It is lovely to have goals and hopes, but for the moment I am living as present as can be. But I will say if I’m settled in a beautiful hobby farm on the coast side with my man, some animals, some offspring and I'm still surfing, I’ll be one happy lady!

What future so you see re sustainability and environmental issues?

At the moment there is so much to be analysed and corrected over the globe with sustainability and environmental issues.

Global warming, climate change, air and water pollution, waste disposal and acid rain are some of the major environmental concerns we are faced with. While there is focus on helping to correct these issues, the exploitation and degradation of our earth is very alarming. While some people turn a blind eye to these issues, there are many individuals, small groups and larger corporations who see the bigger picture. As a whole being aware and making small improvements in our very own lives can make the world of difference.

Being on the coast and being surrounded by other ocean dwellers, there seems to be a common innate love of the ocean and our environment so without coming across prejudice, I do feel like there is a big focus on living ‘more green,’, being conscientious, treading lightly and helping to clean up our earth. Having being surrounded by many like minded people, I do feel like there is a bigger shift and action toward environmental protection and sustainability.
